Kinds of Kundalini Risings

  According to Traditional Kundalini Science, Kundalini Shakti constantly strives to attain a lasting Oneness experience by elevating to Bindu, the pinnacle where she can reside in union with Pure Consciousness. For her ascent, there are six routes, the Shakti nadis, through which she is able to elevate. The Shakti nadis are: Susumna, Vajra, Chitrini, Brahma, Saraswati, and Lakshmi. There are also various energy center (chakra) levels in these routes at which she might take up residence in the course of her efforts until she can go higher.

The kind of rising a person gets depends on the vitality and dynamics occurring in their subtle body at the time of the initial release. This, along with their individual nature based on the pattern of past karmas they carry, determines the types of experiences they have. Non-ordinary experiences can occur at any level. A healthy rising is full of peace, awareness, and understanding.

Correct spiritual practice can affect the quality of a rising, as can factors such as lifestyle behaviors and the interference of subtle influences. The kind of risings people have, along with the past karmas they carry, determine the types of experiences they go through. It is the effect of the rising on vayu (energy) dynamics and the contents of the person’s mind that creates the experienced phenomena reported by people with a Kundalini rising.

To prevent or remedy a blocked rising and to assure spiritual development, careful effort is required to make the individual’s container (body, energy, mind, discernment) strong and pure so Kundalini Shakti can function comfortably and spiritual growth can be attained. Therefore, the great spiritual traditions provide methods that serve to unblock or divert incomplete risings to make them stable and allow them to proceed to spiritual results.

The following terms designate the major stages and types of spiritual process as described in

Kundalini Vidya:

No Rising, Kundalini Stirring, Kundalini Arousal, Kundalini Release, Partial Rising and Intermediate Rising (in Susumna nadi), Deflected Rising (in Saraswati nadi or Vajra nadi), Faux Full Rising, Full Rising (at Makara Point), Upper Process Routes, Complete Process (Pinnacle at Bindu), Bindu direct from Muladhara,  Kaula Marga Vajra Diversion Process, Plateau Samadhi Experience (Advanced process), and Omega (Liberation, Moksha).

These categories provide a framework for discussing the major stages of spiritual development as described through the format of Kundalini process according to Traditional Kundalini Science. A closer look will convey the great variety of experiences possible in the stages of development in Kundalini process:

No Rising

Kundalini Shakti remains unreleased, contained in Muladhara chakra, the Root energy center subtly corresponding to the perineum at the base of the spine. This is the state of an ordinary person, one with no release or rising and no vayu dynamic in Muladhara.

Kundalini Stirring

Kundalini Shakti is shaken within Muladhara due to stimulation of the vayus (energies). The vayus in Muladhara spin, but Kundalini Shakti maintains her place at the mouth of Susumna nadi and does not uncoil her grip from around its base, and so she is not released or arisen. The experiencer may shake, weep, dance, run, jerk, laugh, cry out, or have glossalalia or other remarkable phenomena. This may inspire or motivate the experiencer to repeat the behavior that was the catalyst for the stirring.


Kundalini Arousal

Kundalini Shakti uncoils within Muladhara chakra and withdraws from the opening of Susumna nadi due to stimulation of the vayus, but the energy vitality is too weak and the mind too unfocused or not sufficiently spiritually engaged to support an actual release from the Root center. After an arousal, there is no rising, but Kundalini Shakti stays uncoiled at the Root center, unaware of and unrelated to her Source, for she is no longer facing upward through Susumna to see her Goal.She does not recoil her grip around the base of Susumna nadi, and she resides ungrounded and disturbed. If there is no training for the person to remain focused on virtue, she might be distracted by negative downward pulls and enter the dark substrata minor chakras below Muladhara, there to become engaged in nefarious traits and behaviors.

Kundalini Release

Kundalini Shakti uncoils, withdraws from the opening to Susumna, and, having enough energy and focus in the subtle system, is able to exit Muladhara chakra. This can take place when the pranic system is sufficiently vital and clear and when specific conditions, including intense mental and emotional focus, created by spiritual practice or life shock, are present. Kundalini Shakti can then enter one of the six available nadis and elevate to whatever level she is able to reach at that time. The nadi she enters depends on the conditions in the individual at the moment of the Kundalini release.

Partial Rising

Kundalini Shakti breaks the cap of Swayambhu linga (one of three such structures in Susumna nadi) in the root chakra and goes through the whirlwind above it, rising into Susumna nadi and elevating to the level of Anahata chakra, the Heart center, under the cap of Bana linga. Such a rising is unstable, meaning that Kundalini Shakti does not stay at the Heart level but goes up and down intermittently within the lower levels of Susumna, with her base camp at Muladhara, the Root center. This causes mild to moderate fluctuating experiences until she is able to break through the Bana linga cap at the Heart and elevate higher in Susumna.

Intermediate Rising

Kundalini Shakti rises through Susumna nadi, breaks the cap of Bana linga at the Heart center, and elevates to the level of Vishuddha chakra, the Throat center, or to Lower Ajna chakra, the Brow center. These are stable risings, as Kundalini Shakti remains steadily positioned at the level she has attained and from there attempts to ascend and break the cap of Itara linga in Ajna chakra, the Brow center, so she can reach Makara point at the top of Ajna. Practical talents may be bestowed on people with these risings, but over harvesting them may dissipate and strain the subtle system, delaying spiritual progress.

Deflected Rising (Vajra and Saraswati nadis)

At the time of release, Kundalini Shakti, deflected from entering Susumna nadi, can enter either Vajra nadi or Saraswati nadi, whereupon she rises immediately up to Sahasrara, the Thousand petaled lotus, and opens brain centers there, only to swiftly descend back to Muladhara, which becomes her base camp. From there, she intermittently goes up and down within the nadi she has entered, making these risings unstable. Saraswati nadi has three granthis (knots) that must be opened, and Vajra nadi has five bands in women and two bands in men that must be aligned. Due to brain center activation, various talents and remarkable experiences might result from deflected risings, but there may be some strain also, as Kundalini Shakti cannot reach the pinnacle (Bindu) from either of these cul-de-sac nadis and so becomes frustrated in her efforts to unite with the One. Such a rising must be diverted into a culminating nadi, usually Susumna, and then must be elevated from there to Makara point in Upper Ajna chakra in order to access the Upper Process nadis that lead to Bindu.

Faux Full Rising (Upper Sankhini nadi)

Kundalini Shakti elevates through Susumna nadi and pierces the cap of Itara linga in Upper Ajna chakra, but rather than proceding to Makara point, she is made to stay at Introspector point, which is below Makara point. There she accesses Upper Sankhini nadi rather than proceding upward, and receives special powers, such as persuasion, that worldly leaders can utilize to control their domains or take over new realms. This is an esoteric, non-culminating rising that is not spiritual in its intent.

Full Rising (at Makara)

Kundalini Shakti elevates through Susumna nadi, breaking through the cap of Itara linga at the Brow chakra and reaching Makara point at the top of the Brow chakra. From this entry point to the upper nadi regions that go through Sahasrara, the Thousand petaled lotus, Kundalini Shakti determines which of the culminating Upper Process routes she will take for her ascent to Bindu, the pinnacle. With a Full rising, which is active in the region after Makara and before Bindu, Kundalini Shakti is in Upper Process, where spiritual life truly begins as the aspirant is blessed, purged, purified, educated, and strengthened inwardly. With the aspirant’s sincere cooperative support, Kundalini Shakti is able to go through the Sahasrara lotus, emptying out old karmas while remaining centered and objective.

Upper Process Routes

From her new stable command center at Makara point in the upper Brow chakra, Kundalini Shakti is easily able to direct the functions of her vayus (energies) throughout her container to heal, purify, and renovate it. This restoration project is the essential task of the phase between Makara and Bindu, which involves the strengthening, repairing, and detoxifying of the entire subtle body (which includes the energy, mind, and discernment levels of the person). The Sahasrara system, with its many brain centers correlated to the petals of the six chakras, is also refurbished, improving brain function and endorphin production. This phase can take some time and may be physically and emotionally uncomfortable as the unconscious mind, with its karmic vasanas and samskaras (mental impressions and drives), is unloaded and the entire subtle body system is improved. It can be made easier through skilled spiritual guidance and by the individual’s support of the process through healthy lifestyle and devoted spiritual practices, perspective, understanding, and dedication.

Upper Process routes include:

Upper Vajra nadi process, which initiates a chakra by chakra purge and purification orchestrated from Makara via the brain center petals of Sahasrara;

Upper Chitrini nadi process, which can cause spontaneous body, hand, and breath movement patterns via Brahma Randhra;

Upper Brahma nadi process, which offers increased awareness and now-ness perspective through the Stopping Stations or Guru Triangle routes as well as Hrit process, which gives the holiness and beatitude qualities of the Sacred Heart and yields Bindu experience even before eliminating all the karmic residue (samskaras and vasanas).

Other Upper Process routes include the Kabbalah Tree of Life, the Celtic Holy Grail, the Egyptian Inner Chamber, and other spiritual traditions’ special ways.

Complete Process (Pinnacle at Bindu)

At the top of Sahasrara (the Thousand petaled lotus), Kundalini Shakti goes through the five steps of Brahma Randhra, which is the innermost circle of Sahasrara and the blossom of Chitrini nadi. There she enters into spiritual communion at Visarga, the last part of Brahma nadi, and finally merges into oneness with Pure Consciousness at Bindu, the pinnacle of Brahma nadi.

The initial arrival of Kundalini Shakti at Bindu is called Pinnacle experience. It is the culmination of a rising but not the final stage of spiritual development. It can be without vasanas and samskaras or with, if the subtle body purging has yet to be finished.

Bindu Direct from Muladhara

A complete rising may also rarely occur following an initial release of Kundalini Shakti from Muladhara, the Root chakra, into Chitrini nadi or Brahma nadi. A release into one of these sacred nadis always culminates with Complete process at Bindu. Chitrini nadi process from Muladhara offers a scenic route to Bindu, going through the entire subtle body system chakra by chakra. Brahma nadi process from Muladhara is extremely rare and bestows a direct immediate route to Bindu.

Kaula Marga Vajra Diversion Process

In special circumstances with qualified spiritual direction, the Kundalini Shakti of a spiritually focused, vowed married person with a Vajra nadi rising can divert to Susumna nadi at Muladhara, the Root chakra, and elevate up to Vishuddha chakra, the Throat chakra. There she re-diverts to Vajra nadi at Vishuddha’s Amrita point and elevates, touching Makara at the end of Susumna and ascending directly to Bindu via Brahma Randhra (entering Upper Chitrini and then Upper Brahma nadis), yielding profound ecstasy and brain center capacity. Unloading then happens. This uncommon process is a Left path method provided as a blessing for noble rulers so they have the spiritual and worldly capacity to help their people.

An even rarer variation is a diversion from Vajra nadi into Chitrini nadi or Brahma nadi at Muladhara.

Plateau Samadhi Experience (Advanced process)

Once Bindu has been reached, Kundalini Shakti sets up a temporary base camp location at or below Bindu and commutes from there to Bindu, to which she returns repeatedly until, through the aspirant’s regular spiritual practice, she becomes proficient at quickly and volitionally returning to Bindu to enjoy Oneness experience, which is beyond all phenomena. The phase from Bindu to Omega is called Plateau or Advanced process. Through repeated experience, the aspirant becomes able to go to Bindu easily, to stay there for increasingly long periods of time, and to be able to return to external functioning efficiently.

This commuting phase, in which Kundalini Shakti visits Bindu often and for extended periods, removes any residual deep level karmic material so the practitioner is transformed as he or she progresses through the increasingly subtle and profound levels of Samadhi. The three stages of Plateau experience are: Shuddha beha, which purifies the physical system, Pranava beha, which improves brain function, and Jnana beha, which refines higher intelligence.

Omega (Liberation, Moksha)

Eventually, the advanced practitioner resides in Oneness experience at all times. This is called Moksha, Liberation, Turiya, Nirvikalpa samadhi, or the eternal union of the soul with the One. We refer to this culmination of Plateau experience as Omega. It is the ultimate goal of the spiritual quest and can result in the individual becoming a realized saint, sage, or adept.

Many levels of advancement are available to liberated holy ones. The realized ones are each unique, and each retains some essence of their own temperament and conditioning. Realized beings might travel to give spiritual guidance, they might stay in one place and teach only those who come to their door, they might live incognito as ordinary people, or they might live as hidden hermits, spending their days in Oneness. Those with a special body of knowledge may be invited by the One to serve humanity as adepts. These are able to maintain some presence on the celestial plane while also merging in Pure Consciousness.

The specialty of PKYC is to assist the qualified sincere spiritual seeker to reach Makara point in Upper Ajna chakra and then to support the seeker to culmination with deepening proficiency of Oneness experience at Bindu. After Makara, Kundalini Shakti determines which Upper Route process she will take and then strives in that way toward realization, sponsored by the dedicated cooperation and correct support of the individual aspirant. During this phase, PKYC also provides individualized spiritual education, support, guidance, and recommendations so the seeker can more skillfully and devotedly help Kundalini Shakti make good progress as the individual progresses through Full process to Bindu, the pinnacle. One then becomes more proficient in Oneness Experience in the Complete process Plateau phase with deepened spiritual advancement, which can culminate in Omega, full spiritual realization, Liberation.


Ultimate purpose

Some say that the ultimate purpose of yoga, is to facilitate the awakening of kundalini. From a certain viewpoint, this is true, and from other perspectives it is not. So what is kundalini and what is yoga’s relationship to it?

Vedic philosophy, in particular the school of Tantra, sees Kundalini as the link between the human body and cosmic Divine consciousness, responsible for creation. Kundalini is a potent seed of this force lying dormant at the base of the spinal column in every human body. According to Vedic and Tantric texts it is coiled around the base of the spinal column in three and a half spirals. Hence the ancient sages of India called it kundalini, the one coiled like a snake, and a snake has been symbolic of kundalini ever since. Kundalini is considered manifest aspect of the Divine – the Divine Mother – ‘Shakti’ (Power or Force). She is seen as the aspect of the Divine present in the manifestation and animation of the physical/material world.

The ancient Rishsi (seers) described an intricate network of 72,000 nadis, an energetic vein-like system spread throughout the human body, very much like the meridians of far Eastern systems. The three most important of these nadis spiral upwards from the base of the spinal column all the way to the crown of the head and the seventh yogic chakra called Sahasrahara. The middle pathway, considered the most important of all, is called Sushumana. The other two major nadis on either side of Sushmana are called Ida (the feminine/moon channel) and Pingala (the masculine/sun channel). The six yogic chakras,centers of consciousness, are located vertically above one another at specific intervals along Sushmana where Ida and Pingala cross Sushumna. This complete web of nadis and system of chakras exists, in a subtler dimension of our being. It remains unknown to science of today as it’s subtle form is undetectable to current technology.

When kundalini is awakened, it begins to rise through sushmana ultimately to reach sahasrahara, uniting with Param Shiva, the eternal unmanifest masculine aspect of the Divine. As it spirals upwards through sushmana, kundalini enters the network of nadis and ascending opens the chakras/cakras one by one as it rises.(NB:The chakras of the Indian yogic tradition do not correspond to the chakras as they have been understood and popularized in contemporary times – I will write a separate article on this subject)

It is here that we can see clearly the relationship between yoga and kundalini. As outlined through the eight limbs of yoga, yoga as a spiritual practice is a process of ‘purification’. This purification can be seen as preparation for the awakening and rising of kundalini. Essentially the more purification has been achieved, the faster and more easily kundalini will ascend .

There are many differing ways for the kundalini to awaken and rise. Probably the rarest is when the kundalini rises directly to the crown of the head ‘sahasrahra’. For such a rising of the kundalini to take place a great deal of ‘purification’ must already have taken place, as spiritual practice in the current or other lives. Unfortunately this is often how kundalini awakening is thought of, and without proper understanding seems highly desirable. More commonly the process takes many many years, and may not even complete in the same lifetime that the rising began. In such an instance the process will begin again and continue in another life, sometimes beginning as early as childhood.

Ideally a person has a well-established and integrated spiritual practice prior to, and initiating kundalini awakening and rising. Even more ideally they have the guidance and protection of a Sat Guru or perfect master. If not, my advice would be to find one, and satisfy yourself that they are indeed a fully liberated being. Each individual experiences this opening in a unique way and there are no set pathways. There are lots of common experiences, but each person moves into this awakening on a path of their own. Only a perfect master will be in a position to help guide someone with a kundalini rising.

The Kundalini force in rising, initiates irreversible spiritual purification as it moves through the subtle channels of the body. This cleansing process manifest in the body as yogic ‘Kriyas’. Kriyas are involuntary body movements that occur mostly during meditation or even relaxation. Swaying of the body, rapid movements of the head, twitching and jerking in the body and limbs, are typical of these ‘Kriyas’. Sometimes kriyas take the form of yoga asanas, with people performing them involunatrily . From the onlooker kriyas may appear strange or even alarming when we don’t understand what is happening within the person. For the person experiencing them they do not cause any bodily harm and can even lead to states of deep absorbtion. ‘Kundalini’, being an energy of Divine consciousness, is aware of what is the appropriate step in the process, making the practitioner perform ‘Kriyas’ that are specific to this end.

Often of greater challenge are the mental and emotional dimensions of this transformational process. Our vasanas*, samskaras* and karmas are held, or stored, in the subconscious. The body in turn holds, or stores the subconscious. We can liken the nadis to the subtle energy storage structure of the subconscious in the body. This means that all experience from our past, that is unhealed, unresolved, or incomplete, is transmuted by the kundalini in it’s movement upward through the body towards the crown of the head ‘sahasrahra’. This subconscious material, feelings, emotions, and accompanying beliefs invariably consists of trauma, pain, and fear. In the process of its transformation the egoic mind can experience depression, darkness, and emotional pain, sometimes so deep and inexplicable it seems unbearable. Obviously this can be deeply distressing, not only to the person, but also those close to them. This is exacerbated if there is no awareness of kundalini as the cause, or spiritual process.

Yogic texts elaborate how the kundalini piercing the different consciousness centers (chakras/cakras), can equip the practitioner with siddhis (powers) such as, clairvoyance, the ability to see the past and future, and perceive the existence of subtle planes of existance (among the least dramatic). The vivid and colorful descriptions of the siddhis can be another misguided motivator to pursue awakening the kundalini, in fact these can be quite an unhelpful diversion. When the Kundalini reaches Sahasrahara, and the entire system is ‘purified’ the human spiritual journey is complete as nothing now remains to create the illusion of separation from the Divine and True Nature. This final condition, when all vasanas, samskaras and karmas have been dissolved, is the state known as Moksha. Moksha is then the condition of complete liberation. This differs from enlightenment which begins with the end of identification with mind and reaches it’s final conclusion only with Moksha. Until Moksha is attained, the ‘enlightened’ can still become once more identified with mind, it’s vasanas, samskaras and karmas.

If we make an examination of mystical literature and traditions in cultures outside India we find that kundalini, called by various names, seems to have been a universal phenomenon in esoteric teachings for at least three thousand years. Kundalini-type descriptions or experiences are found in esoteric teachings and symbolism of the Egyptians, Tibetans, Chinese, some Native Americans, and the Kung bushmen of Africa. Kundalini has been interpreted from the Bible as “the solar principle in man,” or possibly the concept as ‘pneuma’, and is referenced in the Koran, the works of Plato and other Greek philosophers, possibly as well in alchemical tracts (the philosopher’s stone), and in Hermetic, Kabbalistic, Rosicrucian, and Masonic writings.

Raising kundalini

What fundamental purpose does raising the Kundalini serve? Why would one want to do it and who (what type of person) would want to do it? At what level of development is one ready to undertake the exercises of Kundalini raising? Are there various degrees of experience in Kundalini raising? I understand some people have their crown chakras opened up for minutes or hours after the experience, while others have them opened for many months at a time. Does this mean one experience was more powerful than the other?

6) What fundamental purpose does raising the Kundalini serve?

>Good question(s). Keep in mind that my answers come from personal
experience and observations, not from books. I’ve read very little about

The activation of the kundalini circuit can be likened to how a larvae
converts into a butterfly. One does not grow pretty wings, but some fairly
dramatic changes occur. The successful raising of kundalini gives birth to
a whole new bio energy circuit. In a way, all primary chakras activate and
begin working together to generate the new circuit.

The major changes occur during a raised kundalini session, which can last
from ten to 30 minutes, or maybe even longer with more training. This is a
most profound state. I’ll post something on this in a minute, to save me
typing it all out again.

But once kundalini has been raised once, the whole energy body begins to
reorganize itself. What exactly happens is difficult to ascertain but the
energy body seems to start growing and developing towards what will become a
new ‘normal’ state of being.

6a) Why would one want to do it and who (what type of person) would want to
do it?

Raising kundalini involves taking a big step in spiritual evolution. It is
possible that this could free one from the reincarnational mechanism of
life, and set one on a new path of evolution, the path of the masters. I
think ascension to becoming a living master is possible through kundalini.

Also, one of the most noticeable things that happens is that during raised
kundalini state, ones higher self manifests very strongly through you. You
virtually become your higher self, but still retain your human personality.
Bathed in the sacred Aummm, ones connection to God is extremely noticeable
and real.

All psychic abilities begin to grow stronger after kundalini has been
raised. And they are fully active during raised kundalini state.

I suspect that once developed (fully medusa effect and beyond) the power of
creation may become normal. But I also suspect that some knowledge of magic
and words of power and creation would also be required. Then whatever is
imagined will appear in the physical. Basically, one transcends and gains
control over the physical environment.

So, yes, spiritual immortality is possible. Physical immortality may also be
possible, if the energy flow out of the body can be reversed, eg, so one
grows younger at will. These things all need exploring. And I plan to do
just this.

7) In relation to item 3), at what level of development is one ready to undertake the exercises of Kundalini

I am still pondering the question of this criteria. But a high level of development is most certainly required.

One needs a strong and balanced mind, and a balanced personality and
emotions, and a reasonably heathy body. The demands of raising kundalini are
great. Full power real time OBE or high level projection are very easy in
comparison. So astral projection should, ideally, be mastered first. And
mastering astral projection in itself is a good indicator that one is ready
to raise kundalini. I think I just answered my own question.

However, some untrained people can OBE quite easily. So I’d say a
combination of at least a trained mind (through yoga or similar) and astral projection ability would be a good starting point.

Age may play a factor, too. One may need to be at least 30 before this can be done. But I need to experiment more to clarify this factor.

8 ) Are there various degrees of experience in Kundalini raising? I
understand some people have their crown chakras opened up for minutes or
hours after the experience, while others have them opened for many months at
a time. Does this mean one experience was more powerful than the other?

This depends on whether kundalini was actually raised, or whether we are
talking about strong chakra activation, or kundalini related phenomena being

There are various ways kundalini can rise, but the end result is the full
snake like phenomenon, which I’ll describe in another post.

Today, a great many energy body phenomena and kundalini related activity are
taken for actual raised kundalini. It can be very confusing. But there is
only one main event; the snake.

9) Is there a point to raising the Kundalini more than once? Are the
experiences different in what is learned/gained every time?

Once kundalini is raised it must be developed and raised many times before
it fully grows. I have not gone past the full medusa and Aumm stage, but I
plan to get back into training very soon. It gets easier to do every time
its done. In time, the fully raised state would replace normal meditation
and etc. This seems reasonable expectation.

Also, raising kundalini many times seems to help the enlightenment process,
which is a staggered affair; one step at a time.

10) What is gained by having the crown chakra opened during and after
Kundalini raising? What can one do with an opened crown chakra that they
normally can’t do when it is closed, or less opened?

I’m not really sure about this as I’ve not experienced this. One also has to
define exactly what is meant by ‘open’. Chakras are not like little doors
that can be opened and closed with some imagination and good intentions.
They are always active, but there are levels of activation. So an open crown
could jsut be a more active than ususal crown. This would cause some psychic
abilities to manifest.

A lot of problems can surround overactivation of the crown center. An
overactive crown can drain one of energy, so energy cannot be accumulated.
It just gets sucked up through the crown. Possession and various mental
problems can also be linked with this problem.

11) What are some of the things people report that they experience during
the Kundalini raising? Are they all fairly similar in theme, or are the
experiences vastly different? (e.g. traveling through tubes of light?,
seeing past lives?)

Yes, the experiences are fairly similar. Kundalini spikes up through the
spine are the norm. A blinding flash of white light in the minds eye, a
powerful OBE or near death experience. Some kind of examination by masters
or deities. I’ve not experienced past lives but this may be possible in some
cases. Travelling through a tube of light may also happen in some cases.

The variety of experiences may be caused by differences in development and
in the energy body, and by the age of the incarnating spirit, eg, spiritual
maturity, etc.

12) In relation to item 6), what is the ULTIMATE goal of Kundalini raising,
assuming it is a process that requires multiple experiences to reach an
ultimate goal.

I think the ultimate goal is to become a physically immortal master. But I
need to explore all this further.

I may have a way to safely train people using something new. This is
experimental but it may work. Kundalini can be raised in the pre OBE
vibrational state. I’ve done this and its quite easy. If one does not need
to raise kundalini fully first, it may be possible to train people to
cleanse and condition the kundalini snake pathway with a lower level of
energy than what normally occurs during the main event.


There is widespread misunderstanding about kundalini. Most seem to
think its a raise once and its done kind of thing. But this is not the case
at all. Kundalini is a discrete bioenergy phenomenon, much like a sneeze or
an orgasm. One could not say after a single orgasm that ones orgasm is now
raised and active. Neither could one say that after a single kundalini
raising, or related phenomena, that ones kundalini is now raised. Kundalini
must be raised many times and developed.

A single kundalini raised experience may last from 5 to 30 minutes. Longer
may be possible with higher development. The raised state is heavily energy
dependent, so when energy resources are reduced it just stops. But while it
is raised one becomes God, in a sense. Ones personality is still present,
but ones higher self rises very close to the surface indeed. And ones higher
self is about as close to God as one can get. So raised kundalini could be
called a full higher self manifestation.

The psychic abilities this causes are the natural abilities of a spirit, and
of ones higher self. They are not created out of nothing, they are freed.

Kundalini does change one and one does experience enlightenment during its
peak. But this is abstract enlightenment, eg, one knows everything at the
time because one is experiencing a level of God consciousness. But after the
experience one reverts to normal consciousness and knowledge. However,
something is then changed and ones inspirational abilities, plus all psychic
abilities, are greatly enhanced.

Then begins the staggered realization process where higher knowledge is
gained one small step at a time. But this progressive gaining of knowledge
will only bear true fruit if one has a sound belief system, and if one
applies the empirical process, eg, first build a solid foundation and then
add to it one thing at a time. If this discipline is not applied one is
likely to float away with the faries.

There are three main ways that kundalini will rise. The first is
spontaneously, in response to mental and emotional and spiritual states of
being, eg, Carl Jung had a spontaneous kundalini rising. The second is
through yoga practice where the body and mind are developed to the point
where kundalini will rise naturally. The third is to manually raise
kundalini by manipulating the energy body with body awareness techniques.
Ideally, a combination of all three would provide the best and safest

To do this, one must first understand the nature of primary energy centers,
chakras, and the base center. A fundamental aspect of the base center is
that it acts a lot like an electrical capacitor. It is also heavily shielded
and earthed, in a bioenergy sense. Another aspect of chakras is their
ability to ‘strobe’. This is a natural high level function. Once a chakra’s
energy peaks, reaches critical mass, it strobes and releases all its energy
in one moment. The natural path for this energy is upwards, and as it floods
upwards it creates new high voltage energy conduits, and flash activates the
chakras above one at a time. This last can happen in several ways, depending
on how prepared the energy body is, but there is only one raised kundalini
phenomenon, eg, the full internal snake phenomenon.

When kundalini rises, it feels like a physical snake as thick as a man’s
wrist forces its way up through the perenium; between anus and genitals. It
forces its way in 3.5 clockwise spiral up through the body. Ones internal
organs will be felt sloshing and moving as they are pushed out of the way,
as kundalini raises through the body, neck and head to the crown.

The internal snake phenomenon is caused by an internal manifestation of
ectoplasm. This is the only reasonable explanation.

A brilliant minds eye flash of light (like a giant camera flash) will occur
at the beginning of a kundalini raising. This leaves a feeling of mild
concussion on the face, as if one had been slapped. This is because the
whole face contains the support structure for the brow chakra, and is thus
involved with the brow center strobe. Note that the brow center strobe can
occur seperately from a kundalini event, eg, during the formation of the
vision screen of high function clairvoyance (what could be called a
Nostradamus level phenomena). Brow center strobes can also result from
various practices, including meditation and astral projection exercises. If
this happens, it indicates strong natural clairvoyance potential is present,
even if dormant and unrealized.

Normally the crown and brow will not fully activate during early kundalini
raising events. But once these activate it feels like ones skull vanishes
and from the surface of ones brain hundreds of fat, fleshy fingers, like
little snakes, are felt to appear. These feel as real as ones other fingers.
At this time, the brow fuses with the crown the one in the nose bridge, and
this new chakra structure is felt as a heavy, fleshy flap hanging down over
ones brow and bridge of nose. This feels as if ones skull (the entire area
above the hair line) has turned into a sea anenome.

These fingers (I think the eastern term is petals) respond instantly to
thought. If one things of any concept, the fingers form intricate geometric
patterns. I think this may be where mandallas come from. Note, if you read
the book ‘Secret of the Golden Flower’, in the commentary by Jung, he
explains that mandallas are resident in the human psyche in all races. I highly recommend this book.

Another interesting phenomenon here is that if one thinks of a living
person, these fingers form a pattern, but some also point to ‘where’ this
person is in the real world.

In order to raise kundalini, one must repeatedly raise a lot of energy to
the base center. Most of what is raised immediately leaks away, is earthed
away. But if this practice is continued, there comes a
point where the insulation is burned away and the base strobes. The first
symptom of this is a massive kundalini spike up through the spine. This can
be extremely painful, burning and electrical sensations. It is wise to stop
for a breather at this point, but without breaking relaxation discipline.

Note that if the body is not prepared by fasting and purging beforehand, the
bowels will turn to water and let go in response to full physical shock.
Now, if one begins raising energy again a minute or so later, another spike
will occur, just as strong but a bit less painful, and then the serpent will
be released. Ideally it will rise fairly rapidly and smoothly all the way to
the crown, in 3.5 clockwise coils.

I recommend 3 days fasting prior to an attempt, or other yoga purging practices can be used to achieve the same internally cleansed state. I find my energy peaks on the 3rd day. This helps as one needs every ounce of energy one can muster to raise kundalini.

A type of near death experience will usually occur. I don’t have enough data
to say for sure, but this is a reasonable observation. In my case, I was
evicted from my physical body (I think it died of shock) and, in brief, I
was examinied by three deities (or ascended masters). Two shook their heads
and retired, but the third came down and helped me. He showed me my errors
and how to rectify my problems through spiritual cleansing (not physical).

When Kundalini has been more developed, eg, raised a dozen or so times (a week apart for each event is wise), and the crown becomes fully active, one will also experience the Aummmm. This is quite loud and if feels and sounds like the word ‘Aummm’ being said continually (one tone) by a man with a deep voice. This, I think, may be the underlaying sound (or Word) of creation.

Warning: This subject must be approached with great care and respect. This is a long term goal, a lifetimes work. Raising kundalini is a dangerous thing to do. And the less prepared and developed a person is, the more dangerous it becomes. Madness and or death can result, as can a variety of serious physical and mental disorders, if one who is unprepared does this. As said, master wake induced OBE first, as this is not only a more achievable goal, but it also helps prepare one for higher levels of energy body activation and kundalini.



Kundalini is a Sanskrit word meaning either “coiled up” or “coiling like a snake.” There are a number of other translations of the term usually emphasizing a more serpent nature to the word – e.g. ‘serpent power’.

The caduceussymbol of coiling snakes is thought to be an ancient symbolic representation of Kundalini physiology.

The concept of Kundalini comes from yogic philosophy of ancient India and refers to the mothering intelligence behind yogic awakening and spiritual maturation. It might be regarded by yogis as a sort of deity, hence the occasional capitalization of the term.

Within a western frame of understanding it is often associated with the practice of contemplative or religious practices that might induce an altered state of consciousness, either brought about spontaneously, through a type of yoga, through psychedelic drugs, or through a near-death experience.

According to the yogic tradition Kundalini is curled up in the back part of the root chakra in three and one-half turns around the sacrum. Yogic phenomenology states that kundalini awakening is associated with the appearance of bio-energetic phenomena that are said to be experienced somatically by the yogi.

This appearance is also referred to as “pranic awakening”. Prana is interpreted as the vital, life-sustaining force in the body. Uplifted, or intensified life-energy is called pranotthana and is supposed to originate from an apparent reservoir of subtle bio-energy at the base of the spine. This energy is also interpreted as a vibrational phenomena that initiates a period, or a process of vibrational spiritual development.

The source text for the concept of kundalini is the “Hatha Yoga Pradipika” written by Swami Svatmarama (English translation, 1992) somewhere between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries. Any examination of the topic should include this work. The pradipika is one of the later developments in yoga sacred texts. Hatha Yoga is strictly speaking a forcing technique which has as its primary aim the forcing of the arising of kundalini.

The main emphasis is a difficult regime of breathing techniques meant to increase the store of “prana” in the body. The well known physical postures are only meant to be an aid to maintain peak physical fitness, so as to support the real work of the breathing practices. All of this has, according to tradition, to be accompanied by prolonged and unbroken meditation practice (for which the main text is the “Yoga Sutras of Patanjali”). The text adds that great good fortune is another requirement, i.e.luck, for the procedure to succeed. However, these techniques are not without dangers.


The Interpretation of KundaliniTwo early western interpretations of Kundalini were supplied by C.W. Leadbeater (1847-1934), of the Theosophical Society, and the analytical psychologist Carl Jung (1875­1961).

Jung’s seminar on Kundalini yoga, presented to the Psychological Club in Zurich in 1932, has been widely regarded as a milestone in the psychological understanding of Eastern thought and of the symbolic transformations of inner peace.

Kundalini yoga presented Jung with a model for the developmental phases of higher consciousness, and he interpreted its symbols in terms of the process of individuation. (Princeton University Press Book description to C. G Jung – “The Psychology of Kundalini Yoga”, 1999).

A few western translators interpret the energetic phenomena as a form of psychic or paranormal energy, although the western parapsychological understanding of psychic energy, separated from its cultural-hermeneutic matrix, is probably not the same as the yogic understanding. Yogic philosophy understands this concept as a maturing energy that expresses the individual’s soteriological longings. Viewed in a mythological context it is sometimes believed to be an aspect of Shakti, the goddess and consort of Shiva.

Kundalini might be said to be a popular concept, since it is widely quoted among various disciplines of yoga and New Age beliefs. However, the recent popularization of the term within new religious movements has – according to some scholars of religion – not contributed to promote a mature understanding of the concept (Sovatsky, 1998). As with many eastern contemplative concepts there exist considerable difficulties, and possible semantic confusion, connected to the way these concepts are adapted to a western context.

This has led to somewhat different interpretations and applications of the concept of Kundalini within the spiritual and contemplative culture in the west. On the one hand there are the New Age popularizations, and on the other hand there is the traditional lineage of Kundalini Yoga understood from its cultural background and interpreted within the academic fields of Religious Studies, Pastoral Theology and Transpersonal/Humanistic psychology.

With the tools of these academic traditions it is possible to give different interpretations to the concept of Kundalini; such as physiological interpretations, psychological interpretations, clinical interpretations, religious interpretations, mythological interpretations and spiritual interpretations.


Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini Yoga is a meditative discipline – or a system of meditative techniques and movements – within the yogic tradition that focuses on psycho-spiritual growth and the body’s potential for maturation. The practice of Kundalini Yoga consists of a number bodily postures, expressive movements and utterances, characterological cultivations, breathing patterns, and degrees of concentration.

The movements and the body-work should not – according to some scholars of religion – be considered mere stretching exercises. The concept of life-energy – pranotthana – is central to the practice and understanding of Kundalini Yoga. It also gives special consideration to the role of the spine and the endocrine system in the understanding of yogic awakening. Recently, there has been a growing interest within the medical community to study the physiological effects of meditation, and some of these studies have applied the discipline of Kundalini Yoga to their clinical settings.


Kundalini in the World’s ReligionsKundalini is mainly associated with Hinduism. However, Kundalini as a spiritual experience is thought to have parallels in many of the mystical and gnostic traditions of the world’s great religions.

Many factors point to the universality of the phenomenon. The early Christians might have referred to the concept as ‘pneuma’, and there are some recent parallels in contemporary Christian Charismatic ‘Holy Ghost’ phenomena. Religious studies also note parallels in Quakerism, Shakerism, Judaic Shuckling (torso-rocking prayer), the swaying zikr and whirling dervish of Islam, the quiverings of the Eastern Orthodox hesychast, the flowing movements of tai chi, the ecstatic shamanic dance, the ntum trance dance of the Bushman, Tibetan Buddhist tummo heat as practised by Milarepa, and the Indically-derived Andalusian flamenco (Sovatsky, 1998). Kundalini practice is centerfold in Japan’s Aum Shinrikyo group and Kundalini-yoga is also one of the stages the practitioner is able to achieve.


Kundalini RisingAccording to yogic terminology the force of Kundalini is supposed to be raised through meditative exercises and activated within the concept of a subtle body, a body of energy and finer substance. This process has been explained in detail by Motoyama (1981) and by Sharp (2005). Motoyama bases the bulk of the Kundalini raising practices listed in the book on the notable Swami Satyananda Saraswati, as well as on personal experience in helping people in various stages of Kundalini awakening. Sharp provides a kundalini meditation called The Great Invocation along with detailed guidance on controlling and managing the energy flow and subsequent manifestation.

Kundalini experiences are often understood in terms of the Hindu chakra system, the understanding of psycho-spiritual energy centers along the spine (Scotton, 1996). According to Hindu tradition the Kundalini raises from the root-chakra up through the spinal channel, called sushumna, and it is believed to activate each chakra it goes through.

Each chakrais said to contain special characteristics (Scotton, 1996). In raising Kundalini, spiritual powers (siddhis) are also believed to arise, but many spiritual traditions see these phenomena as obstacles on the path, and encourages their students not to get hung up with them (Kason, 2000). Although the opening of higher chakras are believed to mark advanced spiritual unfoldment, it is important not to measure spiritual growth solely by the opening of higher potentials. According to this view chakras might be under- or overdeveloped, and lower chakras are thought to be just as important as higher.

Spiritual literature also describes instances where Kundalini is said to be initiated. Initiation of kundalini activity is usually considered to take place by a practice called shaktipat. This is a form of ‘laying on of hands’ where physical contact to the body or the forehead of the subject by the guru, or initiator, is supposed to cause an experience of Kundalini that later may persist or grow with continuing practice, or fade away if practice is stopped. Scotton (1996) mentions that kundalini-symptomatology is associated with such practices as shaktipat. He also gives a case-example of such a practice from an American meditation retreat.

According to much contemporary spiritual literature, and the field of Transpersonal Psychology, it is not considered wise to engage in any of these practices without the guidance of a credible teacher or without thorough psychological preparation and education in yoga. Any form of intense contemplative or spiritual practice without the support of a cultural context, or without the support of thorough psychological preparation, is usually considered to be unfortunate, and in some cases even dangerous. Traditional teachers of kundalini meditation also warn neophytes of the potential dangers of experimenting with kundalini Yoga techniques. These warnings should not be underestimated. A growing body of clinical and psychological literature notes the growing occurrence of meditation-related problems in Western contemplative life. Among these we find the Kundalini Syndrome (which is presented more closely later in this article) and different forms of “wind illness” described in the Tibetan tradition.


Kundalini SyndromeTheorists within the schools of Humanistic psychology, Transpersonal psychology and Near-Death Studies describe a complex pattern of motor functions, sensory, affective and cognitive-hermeneutic symptoms called the Kundalini Syndrome. This psychosomatic arousal and excitation is believed to occur in connection with prolonged and intensive spiritual or contemplative practice (such as meditation or yoga) or as a result of intense life experience or a near encounter with death (such as a near-death experience).

According to these fields of study the Kundalini syndrome is of a different nature than a single Kundalini episode, such as a Kundalini arousal. The Kundalini syndrome is a process that might unfold over several months, or even years. If the accompanying symptoms unfold in an intense manner – that de-stabilizes the person – the process is usually interpreted as what Stanislav Grof has termed “spiritual emergency”

Interdisciplinary dialogues within the mentioned schools of psychology (see references below) have now established some common criteria in order to describe this condition, of which the most prominent feature is a feeling of energy travelling along the spine, or progressing upwards in the body. Motor symptoms are said to include tremors, other spontaneous or involuntary body movements and changes in respiratory function.

Sensory symptoms are said to include subjective changes in body temperature – feelings of heat or cold – a feeling of electricity in the body, persistent sexual arousal syndrome, headache and pressure inside of the head, tingling, vibrations and gastro-intestinal problems. Cognitive and affective symptoms are said to include psychological upheaval, stress, depression, depersonalization or derealization, intense mood-swings, but also moments of bliss, deep peace and other altered states of consciousness. Within the mentioned academic traditions this symptomatology is often referred to as the Physio-Kundalini syndrome or Kundalini-experience Awakening.

Transpersonal literature emphasizes that this list of symptoms is not meant to be used as a tool for self-diagnosis. Any unusual or marked physical or mental symptom needs to be investigated by a qualified medical doctor.


Kundalini and PhysiologyContemporary spiritual literature often notes that the chakras, as described in the esoteric kundalini documents, bear a strong similarity in location and number to the major endocrine glands, as well as nerve bundles called ganglions.

One speculation is that the traditional practices have formalized a method for stimulating the endocrine glands to work in a different mode which has a more direct effect on consciousness, perhaps ultimately by stimulating the release of DMT by the pineal gland,which may be analogous to the ‘pineal chakra’.

The late Itzhak Bentov studied Kundalini from an engineering perspective. According to Bentov (1990), the 7.5 Hz oscillation of the heart muscle rhythm induces mechanical Hz frequencies in the brain, that in turn create a stimulus equivalent of a current loop. The nerve endings in that loop correspond to the route through which the Kundalini “rises”.

This current polarizes the brain part through which it flows in a homogenous way, effectively releasing tremendous amounts of stress from the body. The body then becomes an effective antenna for the 7.5 Hz frequency, which is one of the resonant frequencies of the ionosphere. In layman’s terms, you then pick up information from the air.

This might account for repeated descriptions of heightened senses as a result of rising Kundalini, e.g. as described by Yogananda: “The whole vicinity lay bare before me. My ordinary frontal vision was now changed to a vast spherical sight, simultaneously all-perceptive.”


Pathological KundaliniWhen practiced in a religious context, Kundalini is mostly beneficial and benevolent. However, examples exist of historical figures suffering from kundalini symptoms, such as zen master Hakuin, Saint Theresa, and Nietzsche. The physiological precursors of kundalini also have the potential to diverge into some peculiar types of pathology, as when induced via violence and outside a religious context, where it may be part of a post-traumatic response. Post-traumatic stress disorder researcher Dr. Jonathan Shay (1994) describes several cases with kundalini-like symptoms in his book Achilles in Vietnam.

According to transpersonal theorists the phenomenon of kundalini is not necessarily pathological in itself, but it might produce serious physiological and psychodynamic symptoms if it is activated outside a proper socio-cultural context, or if it conflicts with already existing and underlying psychopathology or issues connected to overall human development.




The coiled and dormant ‘feminine’ energy, refers to the vast potential of psychic energy contained within us all. It is normally symbolized as a serpent coiled into three and a half circles, with its tail in its mouth, and spiraling around the central axis (sacrum or sacred bone) at the base of the spine. The awakening of this serpent and the manifestation of its powers is a primary aim of the practice of Kundalini Yoga. The image of coiling, like a spring, conveys the sense of untapped potential energy that will spring into action soon. For now we remember in small doses.

Kundalini can be described as a great reservoir of creative energy at the base of the spine. It’s not useful to sit with our consciousness fixed in our head and think of kundalini as a foreign force running up and down our spine. The concept of kundalini can also be examined from a strictly psychological perspective. From this perspective kundalini can be thought of as a rich source of psychic or libidinous energy in our unconscious.

Kundalini is most often awaken through Yoga meditation – which include Mantra Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Laya Yoga or Kriya Yoga. I have prepared a meditation to help you on your path should Yoga not be available to you.

To prepare for this meditation – you might want to tape record the words on this page to listen to as your move through the meditation. Please speak slowly and softly.

Allow lots of time for the meditation – as you will need to relax when you are finished.

Find a position that is comfortable for you.

Focus on your breathing.
Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose.
Retain the breath as long as is comfortable.

Now focus your attention on your chakras.

Starting from the top of your head visualize your crown chakra opening.

Watch as pure white light enters your crown chakra
and slowly spirals down through your spine.
The white light opens your third eye chakra.
You may experiences vibrant colors especially in blue, and violet . . .
The white light moves down to your throat chakra releasing your blockages.
You may feel like chanting or singing.
Allow the tones to resonant from your throat.
Do this as long as is comfortable . . .

The white light now enters your heart chakra.
You experience a feeling of unconditional love and compassion.
The white light enters your solar plexus.
Gently your fears – anger – tensions are released.

See the white light enter your spleen chakra
releasing pain and guilt linked to that chakra.

The white light now enters your Root Chakra the seat of your kundalini energy.
As it does, it begins to activate the energy of the base (root) chakra.

Feel the energy suddenly emerge from your Root Chakra,
Spiraling up through the base of your spine as if it were a coiled snake.
The coiled snake represents the spiraling DNA –
opening, activating, bringing you to higher levels of consciousness.
Allow the energy to flow through your chakras.
See the energy wheels rotating.

There is a lot of talk these days about Kundalini. What is it? Sometimes labeled “Sexual Energy”, Kundalini is in fact much more than this. Kundalini is the Full Creative power which resides within each one of us as Unlimited Potential. When awakened, it begins a new phase of transformation for the spiritual aspirant. The Tantric traditions declare that one cannot realize the final goal of Spiritual practice without the awakening of this Kundalini energy. Prior to beginning any formal Tantric practices, for most people, the Kundalini remains dormant. It exists only as Potential, but not as direct experience. Through the Tantric practices, one begins to prepare the body and nervous system for the Kundalini awakening. In the beginning, Tantric practitioners utilize the energy that is available to them, which is the Life Force, or Prana that is active within each living thing. There are even specific practices which seek to awaken and harness sexual energy. The spiritual development and the awakening of Kundalini can be understood through an analogy of the development of the butterfly. When the butterfly starts its life, it emerges in its larval stage as a caterpillar. It is destined to be a butterfly, but it does not yet know that. It lives its caterpillar life, eating leaves and searching to satiate its hunger. It goes through cycles of maturing, growing and shedding it’s cuticle or skin and moulting into a larger stage. After many cycles of growth when the caterpillar is fully developed, hormones begin to be released, signifying the transformation is ready to begin. They go in search of a safe place and molt for the last time, creating a chrysalis as a hard protective layer made from its old body structure. Within the chrysalis, it begins to transform itself into a butterfly. At the end of the transformation, it breaks out of its protective casing, and emerges as its fully developed potential: a butterfly. After a period of time to let the wings dry, it is ready to take flight and experience its new full expression and freedom. The spiritual development of the human being is much like this. In our spiritual infancy, we are like the caterpillar. We roam about focused on fulfilling our innate desires, such as hunger, pleasure, and procreation. Through lifetimes of growth, change and development, we will even develop new desires and interests, desire for power and fame, addictions and aversions. All the while, we are destined to become a Spiritual “butterfly”, to fulfill our natural development, but we are not yet aware of it. We simply go from desire to desire, always seeking, completely identified with our experience of Spiritual infancy. As we get to be more mature as a “caterpillar”, we may start to question the life we have been living, and wonder if there isn’t more to Who We Are. We begin to suspect there is a larger experience or greater potential to this experience, at which point, we may seek out some guidance. We start to learn a more conscious or spiritually aware way of living, thinking and experiencing. We begin to “shed” the old behaviors and beliefs that do not serve our further development. It is during this phase that we will likely be drawn to various types of personal growth, healing work, and spiritual practices. They work in our growth to help release the limitations and prepare us for our final transformation. For Tantric development, this phase will also include consciously working with the Life Force or Prana energy. This includes the sexual energy, but is really more than that. It is all energy that is within us, and that energy is neutral in and of itself, yet very powerful. As we work with the Tantric practices, we are making final preparations within the body, mind and awareness for the final transformation. We free up the energy from the places it had been previously limited or trapped. We develop the capacity of the energy channels in the body to flow freely, and to hold and circulate increasing amounts of Life Force energy. We begin to get glimpses and experiences which reveal the deeper truth of our True Nature. This is a necessary, and powerful time of development, but the truth is, even though major transformation happens, this is still the later phase of the “caterpillar”. The deeper transformation has not yet begun. When the individual has developed enough maturity, the “spiritual hormones” are triggered, signaling the time to stop seeking and prepare for the upcoming metamorphosis. There is a different relationship with life. The adult caterpillar goes in search of a safe place to undergo the transformation, in the same way that the more matured spiritual seeker will now find “safety” within a spiritual teacher and/or a deep spiritual connection. This Teacher often appears in human form as someone who either is further along the Path or already knows their True Nature. In rare situations, the Teacher may not be in a physical body. This Spiritual energetic connection with this Teacher or Guide will provide the safe space for the final development to happen. This Teacher, in whatever form He or She appears, will reveal to the seeker the deeper truth of their True Nature. “You have thought you were a caterpillar, but you are really a butterfly. Now I will help you awaken the butterfly nature that has always been in you.” This begins the Chrysalis phase of spiritual development. A spiritually protected and inwardly directed phase of transformation. It is at some point during this phase, anywhere from beginning to end, that the Kundalini energy is finally awakened. Up until this point, all of the transformation and energetic experience has been Prana or Life force energy. Not until the full preparation and development is complete can the Kundalini be awakened. Kundalini is awakened by the Grace of the Teacher, or the Grace of God. It is not accomplished through the individual will of the student. It cannot be imagined or “visualized” into awakening. It is through Grace and Surrender alone. The Kundalini, once awakened, begins a relatively rapid transformation of the individual, removing all notions of being a “caterpillar”, and awakening the Being into its Full Potential as a “butterfly”. The caterpillar, not knowing it, has had tiny little “wing discs” just under the surface of its skin the whole time. These “wing discs” are like the dormant Kundalini which resides in each one of us at the base of the spine. They are potentially “wings”, but have not yet begun to develop, just as the dormant Kundalini is our Spiritual potential, yet to be awakened and developed. Inside the Chrysalis, at the direction of the awakened Kundalini, the “wings” begin to develop. All old structures are transformed and released, and the fully developed “butterfly” takes form under the Spiritually protected watch of the Teacher or Inner Spiritual Connection. As the butterfly reaches full development, it prepares to break through the protective casing, which now serves as a final limitation to be released. The butterfly frees itself, and then stabilizes itself as the wings dry. Once the wings are dried, the Butterfly is ready for its freedom of flight. It has awakened to its full potential and discovered its Truest Expression. In the case of the “Spiritual butterfly”, or the human being, this True Self is Pure Consciousness with the nature of Unconditional Love, freed from all limitations. Enlightenment, or Self-Realization, as discovering your own True Self, is not so much a “becoming” of something, but is instead the letting go of all you are not. You do not become something different, but instead discover what you were all along. You were always the “butterfly”, you just didn’t realize it because you thought of yourself as a “caterpillar”. You are not the “caterpillar”, not the limited human form you now experience and think yourself to be. You are the “butterfly”, the unconditioned Self, free of all form and limitation. Your very nature is Freedom, Joy, Bliss and Love. This is the Nature of the Self. Each of these phases can potentially take lifetimes, although the final phases of spiritual development are usually relatively quick, compared to the many lifetimes spent in the “caterpillar” stage. It is important to note that the true Transformation or metamorphosis actually begins to take place from birth. There is a total cycle of development that starts from the first lifetime and ends in Spiritual Awakening. Even those that only think they are a “caterpillar”, with no thoughts of anything else, are in fact growing and transforming. Once day, when they are mature enough, they too will undergo a deeper transformation and realize their True Self. With this in mind, it is important to understand that each individual is at the stage of development where they are. Just as a caterpillar cannot become a butterfly on day 2 of life, neither can we rush our development. We must honor the process and be patient, and understand that it will happen in its own organic time. We cannot “awaken Kundalini” before the pre-destined time in our own natural developmental cycle, so before that phase of development, we must learn to be content in whatever phase we are in. This could be the use of Life Force energy and the various healing and Tantric Practices that help prepare the body, mind and awareness for the final Transformation, or it could be a little before or after that. Each phase of development has its own mystery, power and beauty. The more present and accepting of the phase of development you are actually in, the easier and smoother the process will become. Honor where you are on the Path, and continue to savor the experiences and awareness that are available to you in the Here and Now. This will do much more for you than wishing you were more advanced. Embrace this moment and it will gently lead you into your True Nature. As they say “When the student is ready, the Teacher will appear.” This is true of ALL phases of development. We will encounter the teacher(s), healer(s), healing methods and spiritual lessons that we need at each phase of our development. Be present to what you are experiencing and learning now, and set the intention to continue to grow and awaken. Set your goal to awaken to your True Self, if that feels like a genuine desire within you. And then keep taking one step at a time, and see what shows up, what changes, and what direction the Path takes you. When the time is right, the conditions for Kundalini awakening will be ripe, and you will find yourself under the watchful guidance of a Teacher who can assist you in the final phases of awakening. Be mindful of false teachers. Be patient, and keep your eye on your personal spiritual Goal. Desire to be the “spiritual butterfly”, the Awakened Self. Be determined to know your True Self, and then keep taking one step at a time until your transformation is complete. And above all, Trust that you will one day awaken. Whether it is this lifetime or a future one, you cannot help but to discover your deepest Truth eventually, just as the butterfly cannot stop its own transformation. You already are the Highest Self. You just can’t see it yet. And the Path of Tantra Yoga helps you discover Who You Really Are.

Art of Meditation: Brain Development & Enlightenment Part 2 of 3:

In Part 1 of this series we indicated that the natural state of the organism is one where all the internal systems were working at peak capacity. We spoke of how refining the senses, vitalizing energy and sharpening awareness and intelligence were the keys to the completion of this process. In Part I we also provided some specific meditations to help develop the most important (meditation related) senses of hearing and seeing. In this article we will delve into vitalizing energy (kundalini).

Vital energy is required for, not only optimal health, but also for doing the meditations that finally hone intelligence and awareness (discussed in Part 3 of this series). There are two primary sciences for building this energy, yoga (the use of physical postures (asanas), body locks (bandhas) and motion), and pranayama (the science of breath). In this article we will provide a very powerful and complete pranayama set which, when done consistently, can remarkably increase and awaken energy. For those familiar with Kundalini and the Chakra system I will provide the details of how each pranayama exercise works with regard to the charkas. If you are not familiar with this framework not to worry, the set will work for you just the same (and you can familiarize yourself with this topic, if you like, by visiting the Kundalini Yoga category). For this article it is sufficient to think of Kundalini as the total energy of man. Kinetic Energy, which is already active and flowing and Potential Energy that lies within waiting to be awakened.

Below is the detailed description to channel & release these energies:–


  1. The sitting positions for the set can be cross legged (Sukn Asana) or on a chair (refer to the Silent Mind Meditation Program Chapter 4: Yoga for Meditation for more details on these postures if required)
  2. Starting time for each pranayama exercise is 15 seconds; build up to 3 minutes per exercise.
  3. All the pranayamas should be done one after the other with no rest in between if possible.
  4. The rhythm for the breathing is 36 cycles per minute where specified. The exercises normally are done to music, which provides this correct rhythm of 36 cycles per minute. In the event you do not have this music, use a stopwatch or other time device to set the pace of your breathing correctly.  If you are using a time device it helps to break it down to 18 cycles / 30 seconds to help keep the correct pace.

Pranayama Set For Vitalizing Kundalini


Exercise 1: Chest Pump Pranayama: Place both hands on the center of the chest one on top of the other palms facing in; relax the elbows. Begin breathing deep and fast limiting the breath to the chest area only. The breath should be in rhythm and at a pace of 36 cycles / minute.

Benefits: Works on the Lungs and Heart. The pranayama improves lung capacity thus allowing intake of more of that magical ingredient prana (the life giving and vital aspect of air). It also helps blood flow and circulation by working on and improving the heart. This is also the region of the energy vortex (charka) called the Anahat Chakra, which is responsible for the flow of that divine energy called Love.

Exercise 2: Navel Pump Pranayama: Place both hands above the navel one of top of the other palms facing in. Begin breathing deep and fast limiting the breath to the abdominal area. The breath should be in rhythm and at a pace of 36 cycles / minute.

Benefits: The pranayama works on optimizing the digestive system and all associated organs in that region. Both absorption and excretion are improved. The Nabhi or Manipura Chakra governs this region, which is the seat of Willpower. Work on this region balances the organism providing it a calm strength and ability to sustain difficult activity over time.

Exercise 3: Full Pump Pranayama: Sit with legs extended, keeping knees straight and hold as far down the legs as possible while keeping the back straight. Holding the toes is ideal. Begin breathing deep and fast allowing it fill both the chest and abdominal cavity. The breath should be in rhythm and at a pace of 36 cycles / minute.

Benefits: This posture along with the pranayama promotes healing, longevity and flow. It stretches the longest nerve in the body (the sciatic nerve) along with stretching the entire backside of the body. It elongates the spine and frees it of blockages and insures proper flow of energy up and down the vital channels that run in and along the spine (sushumna, ida and pingla). The lower 2 chakras (Muladhara and Swadisthan) are activated and balanced by this exercise, which relate to our grounded and creative natures respectively.

Exercise 4: Staccato Breathing Pranayama. In this pranayama you will partition the breath into 5 short, successive inhalations through the nose, filling the lungs completely, to make one complete inhalation, then release the breath forcefully via the mouth in one exhalation. In other words, one 5 part inhalation through the nose, followed by a single explosive exhalation through the mouth.

Benefits: This pranayama dramatically increases lung capacity and elasticity and improves blood circulation. The partitioned breathing is key in increasing lung capacity for we seldom use our full lungs when taking a single breath. This exercise is also very potent in increasing the overall strength of our nervous system.

Exercise 5: Segmented Breathing Pranamaya. In this pranayama you will inhale slowly for 5 seconds, hold breath for 5 second, exhale slowly for 5 seconds and hold again after exhalation for 5 seconds before repeating the cycle. In other words each portion inhalation, hold, exhalation, hold should take 5 seconds so 1 complete cycle takes 20 seconds.

Benefits: This pranayama works to calm the entire organism including brain function. It helps to break down the pattern of the constantly reactive mind and ignite insight by teaching the system to be still and behold.

Exercise 6: Neck Lock (modified Jalandhara Bandha). Sit up straight, take a deep breath hold, pinch the nose shut with thumb and index finger and apply Jalandhara Bandha (neck lock). Neck lock is applied by bringing the chin down to the hollow of the throat and with free hand pressing down gently on the top, back of the head. Once in the position swallow as in the act of drinking 5 times and then release, lower your hands and raise your head. Take another deep inhalation, hold and repeat exercise.

Benefits: The exercise works to sharpen all the senses. Also works on the thyroid, parathyroid and pituitary glands thus improving all the related functions for these critical glands. The throat is the seat of the Vishuddhi Charka, which is responsible for our communication as well as our thinking. Thus working on this chakra gives you power over speech and improves your brain function.

End: Pranayama Set for Vitalizing Energy Kundalini

This pranayama set above has its roots in Sage Pantajali’s Yoga Sutras and from the research I have done it has been revived and explained by S.N. Tavaria, a modern master of Yoga. This set is a rare gem. It is very complete, does not require all day to do and most importantly the pranayamas are very effective in refining and optimizing your critical physiological systems at many levels. It has numerous health benefits but for those interested in the science of enlightenment, this set helps turbo charge the entire system and prepare it for the next stage. Having vitalized Kundalini energy, we are now ready for the next and most important requirement, which is to sharpen awareness and intelligence to promote insight. In the next part of the series I will cover this work, but before that I would like to provide some comments and helpful hints regarding the above set.

Hints and Comments:

1. Do it regularly! I can’t emphasize that enough. This pranayama set is going to radically change you physically, but needs to be done consistently to bestow its affects. If you are doing 1-2 minutes / exercise you can do the set twice a day. If you are doing the full 3 minutes / exercise only do the set once a day.

2. Don’t try to do more than you are comfortable with. Take your time building up. If you push too hard you may find yourself resisting doing the set daily and that will be counter productive.

3. Drink plenty of water after doing the pranayamas as it helps wash out any toxins that were released into the blood stream.

4. Before doing the pranayamas stretch a little. Especially your hamstrings for exercise #3 and more so if you plan on practicing it in the morning, when the body tends to be stiffer.

5. Don’t eat at least 1-2 hours prior to doing the set.

6. While doing the pranayamas remain as attentive as possible of the present moment, try not to wander off mentally.

5 Stages

The 5 stages of spiritual development are really the stages of wisdom that come as you move through your spiritual practice.

Saram Pad (the novice) – When you are introduced to a spiritual path.  You may be called to do, learn or explore something new.  It is the honeymoon phase when we are happy and everything seems fresh and new.

Karam Pad (the apprentice) – The daily practice you are to do on the spiritual path.  It is all about the action, doing, and practice.  It is a time of redefinition and development and experience.  Aligning with deeper practice.  We work on ourselves.  Rub up against discomfort.  Each piece is assigned by a mentor.

Shakti Pad (the craftsman or practitioner) – This is where you confront your ego.  You experience wonderful things and work through neurosis or head into hard to bare realms.  This is where you either decide to keep going, stay at an apprentice level, or quite altogether.  This is where you choose to follow your own desires or the higher values of the path you are studying.

Sahej Pad (the expert) – You become infinite and aligned with your destiny.  You are in flow.  It is a stage of ease, balance, and grace when everything fits together.  The expert learns by teaching.

Sat Pad (the master) – Gone through the process of purification.  Living a life of service.  When the observer dissolves.  There is no separation…just transcendence.

How do these relate to my own life and development?

When I look back through my Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training (KYTT) journal I can see clearly the early excitement I had of starting something new.  I felt called to take the KYTT and it was a fresh journey to embark on.  I see a distinct shift when I really was questioning everything and rubbing up against parts of myself I thought I had healed or had not revealed.  I was past the honeymoon phase and felt a deepening.  I stayed there up until the last class.  I moved to apprentice after I started a regular practice.  Everything seemed to fall into place and more work began on myself.  It has redefined so much in my life.  Strange to look back and wonder who that old me was.  I am working in this zone and wonder what will happen when the mentor disappears.  That is where I will see where the rubber hits the road.  Will I choose to teach?  Will I decide to keep going?  Will I quit?  Will I have enough discipline to continue on without knowing things are due for the next class?  For now, I keep working through it day by day and moment by moment…paying attention and letting the next stage emerge.

In my non-yoga time:  These phases apply to all aspects of life.  At some point what you do is new and you move through it or onto the next thing.  Interesting to look at it outside of the yoga part.  Although more than ever it is all yoga…the yoga of life.  It ain’t just what happens on the mat anymore.  I feel like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz…I’m not in Kansas anymore.  I wonder if clicking my red shoes would work on the mat?
